Engr Dozie Akwarandu is a registered Civil Engineer, with passion for making a difference in the life of others.
He was diagnosed with Colorectal Cancer on pathological stage III, after some wrong diagnosis. He had multiple surgeries, a colon resection and anastomosis.
Thereafter, he continued the journey with the management of the dreaded disease. Family and friends almost gave up hope on survival; as cancer diagnosis in Nigeria is akin to a death sentence and in perception, survival rates are almost non-existence.
He says "I am currently a permanent rider on the struggle bus... Multiple surgeries, Cancer, Chemotherapy. Lost count of tablets, infusion and hospital visits. My body was destroyed from all of the above."
They have made me so passionate too and I am thankful for the years of survivorship.
He founded Nest Of Hope Advocacy and Support Community, a Patient-based advocacy and support organization. Through his work, Dozie aims to provide Hope and Support to those affected by cancer, and to advocate for improved cancer care and awareness in Nigeria.
Hear him; "Cancer tried to dim my light, but I arose stronger, brighter and full of Hope." As a primary actor/lived experience, I feel the need to raise a voice to help make the difference and change needed in cancer control, and also the way Africans and Nigerians think about cancer.
I need this platform to also beat the stigma associated with cancer. Through his efforts, the organization provides support and fundraises for cancer patients, breast prosthesis, colostomy bags, and accessories.
Together, let's continue to raise awareness, support one another and spread Hope to those still on their journey. "We are Survivors."
